Short biographical note:
Maria Okońska (1920-2013) - Polish philologist and psychologist, associate of Primate Stefan Wyszyński.
Participated in the Warsaw Uprising under the pseudonym "Emmanuela". Since 1942 she cooperated closely with Stefan Wyszyński, together with him she founded the Primate Institute (today the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Institute).
She was the only witness to the Jasna Góra Vows of the Nation by Cardinal Wyszyński, taken in seclusion. She was mentioned by name in the Warsaw will of the Primate of the Millennium.
Cooperating with the Primate, she had frequent contact with Karol Wojtyla. She witnessed Karol Wojtyła and Stefan Wyszyński spending their holidays together. She also visited John Paul II in Rome.
Summary:
Refusal to issue a passport to Primate Wyszyński for the Synod of Bishops to Rome and America and Wojtyla's solidarity reaction.
Karol Wojtyla's friendship with the Primate of Poland. Holidays spent together in Bachledówka - long private talks; playing volleyball and singing in the evening.
Death of Pope Paul VI. The 1978 conclave and the influence of Primate Wyszyński on Wojtyła's acceptance of his election as Pope. How the Primate survived Wojtyla's election. Meetings with John Paul II in the Vatican after his election.
The assassination attempt on John Paul II and the Primate's severe illness at the same time. Crowds of prayers on the Castle Square in Warsaw.
