Short biographical note:
Maciej Płażyński (1958 -2010) - lawyer, politician. In his youth, he was associated with the Young Poland Movement, co-founder of the Independent Students' Association (the first independent student organization in Poland), an active member of the Solidarity opposition.
From August 1990 to July 1996, the first non-communist voivode of Gdańsk. Member of the Seym, Speaker of the Seym for the third term; Deputy Speaker of the Senate for the sixth term; co-founder of the Civic Platform, which he soon left. Since 2008 President of the 'Polish Community' Association. He died on 10 April 2010 in the Smolensk air crash, while heading for the Katyn celebrations.
