FILMED AT:
Gniezno, Częstochowa
Thematic scope:
The recording shows the celebrations of the Millennium of Baptism of Poland - that is thousand years since the baptism of the first historical Polish ruler – Mieszko the First. The celebrations were held all over the country, the main events taking place in Gniezno and Częstochowa.
Gniezno, the capital of Mieszko’s country can however also be considered the place where the Polish ruler got baptized. The recorded festivities took place on April 13 and 14, 1966 ( Mieszko could have been baptized on Easter 966, which was then on April 14 ). Religious ceremonies and scientific conference sessions were held in the Cathedral of Gniezno and the Cathedral Square and led by the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. At the ceremonies was also present the former Archbishop of Kraków - Karol Wojtyła. The special historical lecture gave Dr. Jerzy Kłoczowski.
From the 16th minute of this recording we can watch the Millennium Celebrations in Częstochowa on Jasna Góra. The shrine with the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa is considered the spiritual “capital” of the catholic Poland. The ceremonies took place on May 3, 1966 on the feast of Our Lady, Queen of Poland. On that day, in the presence of approximately half a million of believers the Primate Stefan Wyszyński and the Polish bishops performed the Act of Consecration of Poland to the Mother of God. This recording also includes the part of the ceremony – the procession led by the Archbishop Karol Wojtyła on the fortifications of the Jasna Góra sanctuary.
