Summary:
Cardinal Karol Wojtyła reports on conversations with Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Agostino Casaroli, the Vatican diplomat responsible for relations between the Holy See and communist countries. The talks concerned the creation of a new church administration in the lands of western and northern Poland (Silesia, Lubuskie Land, Western Pomerania, and Warmia and Mazury). These lands had been taken away from Germany after the Second World War and granted to Poland under the decisions taken at the Conferences of the Powers at Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam. Since 1945 there was a temporary church structure in these areas, the so-called Apostolic Administrations. It wasn’t until the German government had recognised the new borders that it was possible to establish permanent dioceses. In 1970, an agreement on the normalisation of relations between Germany and Poland was signed. Cardinal Wojtyla talked about settling the matter of permanent dioceses in Rome, which the Polish Church cared about very much. However, Archbishop Casaroli stated that it would be appropriate to await the ratification of the agreement by the parliaments of Germany and Poland, which took place two years later.
