Thematic scope:
This recording shows the celebrations of the Millennium of Baptism of Poland – that is thousand years since the baptism of the first historical Polish ruler – Mieszko the First. The celebrations were held all over the country.
This recoding shows the second part of these celebrations, which took place in Kraków on May 8, 1966, on the liturgical commemoration of St. Stanisław – martyr and bishop of Kraków and the principal patron of Poland. They were led by the Primate of Poland Stefan Wyszyński. At the ceremonies was also present the former Archbishop of Kraków, Karol Wojtyła.
One of the main components of the celebrations was the procession with the relicts of St. Stanisław, which has been taking place every year for centuries. First, the relicts of the bishop are carried from the Wawel Cathedral to the Church “On Skałka” in Kraków - the place of the martyr’s death of St. Stanisław – then, they return to Wawel again. Karol Wojtyła, while in office as the Archbishop of Kraków, was always strongly committed to these traditional processions, thereby making them more and more popular. By participating in these processions many Catholics could express not only their faith but also their disagreement about the politics of the state and the spreading of atheism.
